The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Advisory Board serves the City of Atchison by advising the City Commission and City staff on all matters related to accessibility at public facilities within the City of Atchison.

Since their beginning in 2013, the ADA Advisory Board has reviewed internal accessibility audits, prioritized the types of accessibility improvements to address first, and made recommendations on specific projects to improve accessibility in the community.

In 2014, the ADA Advisory Board recommended $50,000 worth of wheelchair ramps, alley crossings, and sidewalk repairs in Atchison’s downtown, which was then authorized by the City Commission.

In 2015, the ADA Advisory Board recommended prioritizing a series of accessibility and building improvements for City Hall, which was then authorized by the City Commission. Later in 2015, the group has prioritized the construction of handicapped accessible parking spaces at each of the City’s public parks.
