Public Meeting on Downtown Historic Resources Survey
ATCHISON, KS. — The City of Atchison and the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce / Locally Atchison Main Street will co-host a public meeting at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22 to discuss an upcoming historic resources survey to be conducted in the downtown Atchison area in the coming months.
The survey effort is part of ongoing work to better understand, document, and preserve the historic character of downtown Atchison. The survey will evaluate a range of historic-era resources, including buildings, structures, and sites and will help establish a clearer record of downtown development patterns and architectural features.
The survey area will focus on the downtown commercial district and surrounding blocks containing a concentration of historic buildings. The information gathered will be logged into the Kansas Historic Resources Inventory and could ultimately lead to the designation of a potential historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
The survey will be conducted by Post Oak Preservation, a firm with substantial experience in architectural history and community-based historic documentation. Field work will include exterior photography, mapping, and research into construction dates, architectural styles, and historic uses.
Members of the public and building/business owners are encouraged to attend and participate. Oral and written comments will be recorded and local knowledge about downtown buildings, businesses, and historic uses is welcomed.
The public meeting will be held at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22nd at Atchison’s historic Santa Fe Depot, located at 200 S. 10th Street, Atchison, KS 66002.
