City of Atchison Fire Hydrant Annual Testing

In Featured News, Fire News, General News, News

Please be advised that the City of Atchison will be testing fire hydrants starting September 16th and continuing throughout the month of October. The testing will be conducted Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. This testing will take place from 17th Street to the west and the entire southern portion of the City, south of Main Street.

There are 3 main reasons for this testing:

  1. To make sure that the hydrant is operating correctly
  2. To document the amount of flow and pressure at the hydrant for fire-fighting purposes
  3. To clean the lines of any unsettled material that may cause unhealthy conditions

The testing operation may result in brief periods of reduced water pressure – especially for those customers located in low pressure areas – or discolored water.

This procedure is being conducted to improve our distribution system and to ensure the delivery of the highest quality of water possible.

The City advises customers to refrain from using water or doing laundry as much as possible when discolored water is present. If you experience discoloration and rust particles in your water:

Locate the farthest and highest cold-water faucet in your home from the water meter.

Remove the aerator if there is one and turn on the cold-water faucet until the water runs clear. If the water is still discolored after running the cold water for 10 minutes, please turn off the faucet and check it again one hour later.

Should a problem persist please contact the Water Dept. between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 367-5563.
