As the possession, sale and use of fireworks are prohibited within Atchison city limits, Fire Chief Patrick Weishaar requests residents leave it to the professionals this Independence Day.

We encourage people to take in one of the public displays, if possible. The ban on fireworks within the city limits of Atchison is not only for the safety of our community but also to lessen the stress on our pets.

Atchison Fire Code defines a firework as any device meant for creating a visible or an audible effect for entertainment purposes by combustion, deflagration or detonation. Some fireworks are legal, like poppers, snakes, smoke bombs and sparklers, but any firework bearing the logo of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation is illegal within Atchison city limits.

Furthermore, fireworks like Bottle Rockets, M-80s, M-100s, and silver salutes are prohibited statewide.

Even legal fireworks pose dangers, particularly for children ages 5 to 14, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Avoid injury by providing constant adult supervision and setting a good example around fireworks.

Taking in the beauty of a fireworks show in Atchison is as easy as a trip to Warnock Lake, where shells will be ignited by licensed professionals during the Atchison Community Fireworks show. The show is free and open to all and will start at approximately 9:30 p.m. on the 4th of July.
