At approximately 1:27 pm on Friday 1/30/2026 we were paged to 302 N 2nd St. for a report of a house on fire, adding that it was reported to be engulfed in flames. On arrival we found heavy smoke and flames coming from the side porch and back room of the 2-story brick home. Bystanders on scene stated that no one was currently living in the residence. We were able to quickly extinguish the fire on the back porch and begin firefighting operations in the back room. The fire had also spread to the second floor and adjacent kitchen in the other back corner of the home. Firefighters continued to battle the fire while off duty crews raced to the station to assist and bring our ladder truck. With the use of our ladder truck, we were able to fight the fire that had spread to the 3rd floor attic. Firefighters continued throughout the afternoon, working their way though the house that was being used for storage making it difficult to maneuver. Crews continued through the late afternoon checking for hot spots and extension.

In spite of the unsavory weather conditions, our crews did a tremendous job saving this historical building, constructed in 1880, with minimal structural damage, leaving the integrity of most of the home’s unique features.

No injuries were reported. Atchison PD, Atchison County EMS, The Atchison Salvation Army, Evergy, Kansas Gas and Atchison City street & water crews also all responded and assisted along with great coordination and communication from our dispatchers at Atchison County Communication center.
