The City Commission earlier this year approved the creation of a Board of Building Code Review. Previous adoptions of electrical and plumbing codes were handled by separate Boards and by recommendations of City Staff. The new Board has members from electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical trades combined into one Board. Each of the members have decades of experience in their respective fields. The diverse backgrounds of the individuals of this Board have provided a very constructive base upon which to build.
The main task of this Board is to review, amend, and recommend for adoption all construction codes utilized in the City of Atchison. The final adopted regulations serve as a minimum standard for construction, repair, and maintenance completed within the City limits of Atchison.
The most recent Code adoption happened in November of 2014. The majority of construction codes are on a three-year cycle of updating and production. Up-to-date codes take advantage of newer technologies, materials, and allow for more seamless plan creation by professional architects and engineers. Continuing education required for those licensed personnel is also based on the more recently developed codes.
The Board of Building Code review has met and reviewed the following Codes for adoption:
- 2018 International Building Code
- 2018 International Residential Code
- 2018 Uniform Plumbing Code
- 2018 Uniform Mechanical Code
- 2017 National Electrical Code
- 2018 International Existing Building Code.
These Codes have been amended by the action of the Board during its meetings. The document shown is a draft copy of these changes as proposed by the Board and will be recommended to the City Commission for adoption in December. Copies of the proposed code books are available for review at the Community Development Office at City Hall. The complete language of the proposed ordinance is available from the Community Development Office or at the following link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1IW7oKFPXf51FZDIIS0dBeItdJab3FzSS
All interested parties are encouraged to comment on the proposed adoption to the Community Development Office, by email to philb@cityofatchison.com, or by phone at (913) 367-5560. All comments from the public will be forwarded to the Board of Building Code Review.
