As an attempt to increase knowledge, excitement, and participation in city government, the City of Atchison is launching a 5-week Citizens’ Academy. The program will offer residents a closer look into the inner workings of the city and how staff utilizes resources and facilities.

The first session of Citizens’ Academy will be June 16th, 2021. The class will be held once a week for five weeks on Wednesday from 5:30pm to 7:00pm with each session beginning at City Hall. The class dates are June 16th, June 23rd, June 30th, July 7th, July 14th, and a graduation ceremony held for participants who complete at least four of the five classes during the city commission meeting on Monday, July 19th.

Courses will provide opportunities for citizens to learn more about where their community leaders work, what services each department provides, and how they themselves can participate.

Participants will get to tour the locations and departments where the City’s staff operates and receive first-hand knowledge from the leading staff in each department. They will be familiar with who is responsible for local development projects, how goals of the City are determined and achieved, and what it takes to keep streets, people, and the area safe.

The program is open to all Atchison residents over 16 years of age to apply for. Applications can be submitted through mail at 515 Kansas Ave, Atchison, KS 66002 or emailed to Juile Behler at julieb@cityofatchison.com. The deadline to apply is June 8th.
