Atchison Fire Department, Lieutenant, David Downing Jr., was recently awarded a letter of commendation for his life saving actions in the early morning hours of February 12th  2022 when Lt. Downing pulled an injured firefighter from a burning building. The fellow firefighter became injured while the pair were actively fighting a house fire. Lt. Downing was able to pull the injured firefighter to safety where he was treated by Atchison County EMS and transported to Atchison’s Amberwell Hospital. The injured firefighter has since recovered and is back to work.

David has worked for the Atchison Fire Department for 14 years. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2017.  He received his certification as Fire investigator in 2018 and has been an asset for us investigating several fires.

David is an Atchison native, and graduate of Atchison High. Before joining us, David served in the United States Army where he served overseas in Iraq in 2006 to 2007.

Lt. Downing is a huge asset, not only to his community & the Atchison Fire Department, but also his fellow firefighters.  This latest action is just another example of his professionalism, commitment, and hard work.  We are very grateful and  proud of Lt. Downing for this, and all the accomplishments he has achieved in his time with us – Patrick Weishaar, Atchison Fire Chief.
