Recently the Atchison Fire Department was awarded 2 separate grants for equipment. The Kansas Pipeline Association awarded the department¬† $3,000 for the purchase of equipment related to the response of petroleum and natural gas emergencies. More recently FEMA awarded the department nearly 11,000 in funding for the purchase of a Thermal Imaging Camera and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). All considered essential equipment and will no longer have to be funded by city tax dollars. ¬† Fire Chief Pat Weishaar stated “These funding opportunities come at a great time, when previous equipment has become unreliable or inoperable.” Weishaar continued to comment, ” All this equipment is needed and used daily in the multitude of incident types we respond to and we are grateful for this funding.” The equipment is in the process of being ordered or shipped and the firefighters look forward to having it in their arsenal soon.
