The Atchison Police Department had a clearance rate of 91.6% in 2021, the highest ever in the department’s recorded history and much higher than the national average which is in the low 60% range. The rate is the result of clearing 1,017 of the total 1,110 criminal cases throughout the year. The PD clearance rate has improved every year since 2017, with the rate at 89% in 2020.
“We have a department full of professional, experienced officers,” Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson said. “We are trained to protect and serve, and the overwhelming majority of the time, we solve crimes when they occur in Atchison.”
Overall crime was down by 7.5% in 2021, continuing its trend from the prior year when it was down 6%, as the Atchison Police Department continues to impact local public safety.
There were no homicides in 2021, marking the fourth consecutive year that the city has been homicide free.
“The numbers show what most of us in Atchison already know,” Atchison Interim City Manager Justin Pregont said. “Atchison is a safe place to live, work and raise a family.”
Burglary was down 20% in 2021, and theft was down 15%. There were 17 vehicle thefts reported in the city in 2021, and all 17 stolen vehicles were recovered.
