Another long vacant property in north Atchison will soon feature a new single family home. Following acquisition of the property from the City of Atchison’s Land Bank Program, Highland Community College’s Construction Technology Program began construction on their second project in as many years earlier this fall. The new home is to be located on the northwest corner of 6th Street and N Street in north Atchison, located immediately across the street from the project completed by Highland earlier this year.
Lucas Hunziger, Highland Community College’s Director of Technical Education at the Atchison campus, is pleased with how the program is positioned following a return to the Atchison community last school year. “This land bank / housing development partnership has afforded us a great opportunity to further our Construction Technology Program. We are currently framing our second home in the North 6th street neighborhood and we’re hopeful we can find other opportunities in Atchison going forward.”
“Our Land Bank Program is a valuable tool in our economic and community development toolbox,” said Justin Pregont, Assistant City Manager. “The City’s Land Bank Program allows us to hold, aggregate, and redevelop vacant and underutilized real estate throughout the City of Atchison with limited carrying costs. The partnership with Highland Community College has been win/win/win for the City of Atchison, Highland Community College, and our local housing market.”
