Where Do Property and Sales Taxes Go?
With the Save Our Streets Sales Tax Question by special ballot on Thursday, July 14, there has been some question as to where current City property and sales taxes go. The short answer is Police, Fire and Public Works, which make up the majority of the city budget, cost more to provide than those taxes generate in Atchison. Although it is never a perfect option to raise taxes, if residents want better city streets and some property tax relief, an additional revenue source like the Save Our Streets Sales Tax Question is necessary. Simply cutting spending would not be enough – and would result in diminished mowing of public parks and watersheds, and/or public safety services.
