About This Department
The Atchison Police Department provides protection of life and property. We assure the preservation of human rights and enhance quality of life by working in partnership with the community to maintain safe surroundings for all residents, property owners, and visitors.
The Police Department provides a wide range of law enforcement services for the Atchison community. Under the leadership of Chief Mike Wilson, the Police Department maintains the national officer-to-citizen standard of approximately 2::1,000.
Services include patrol, investigations, proactive community service, animal control, and specialized units including K-9, Special Response Team, Motorcycle Patrol, and Bicycle Patrol.
Police Chief Wilson has overall authority and responsibility for the operation of the Department. Duties include establishing operating guidelines, budget planning and oversight, overall supervision of department personnel, and responsibility for the quality of service provided by the Atchison Police Department.
Emergency calls are received via a 911 system located in the Atchison County Joint Communications Center. For non-emergencies calls for service dial 913-367-4323
Investigation Process
- A crime victim reports a criminal incident.
- The responding police officer writes and forwards a report to the Investigations Division.
- The Investigations Division uses established criteria to assign a case to a detective.
- The Crime Scene Investigations Unit collects and processes evidence.
