Can You Be a Sworn Atchison Police Officer?
Perhaps no professional group other than police is subjected so continuously to the range of physical and mental stress under hazardous conditions common in police work. Each applicant must be measured in all dimensions, including mental ability, social skills, character and psychological health, as well as physical health, fitness and stature.
To be considered for employment, you must be able to meet the following standards:

- Excellent health
- Age 21 or older at the time of employment
- You must have a high school diploma or a GED equivalent (higher degree preferred)
- Possess or can acquire a valid Kansas driver’s license

The entire recruitment process may take a minimum of 4 weeks to a maximum of 6 weeks depending on an applicant’s background and the number of applicants in the process.

Training and Career Development in a Professional Police Organization
The Atchison Police Department partners with other law enforcement agencies across the state to educate and train officers collaboratively at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson, Kansas. The academy usually runs for approximately 14 weeks.
Once hired, a recruit is placed on a six-month probation. Once hired, the recruit is assigned to the Field Training program with an experienced officer for about six months.
Promotions are obtained on the basis of various competitive processes.
