Why we exist
Animal Control provides support to Atchison’s domestic animal population and the people who love them. We enforce animal control ordinances and protect domestic animals from abuse, neglect, or maltreatment.
How we do business
Whenever possible, our goal is to reunite pets and owners. If an owner can’t be located and if the animal is adoptable, we make every effort to find it a forever home.
We also write citations for ordinance violations, investigate cruelty and neglect complaints, investigate animal bites, work with animal owners to resolve barking and disturbance complaints, and make educational presentations to civic groups, neighborhood associations and school classes.
We’re a mobile unit, frequently stopping in at the shelter to care for the animals and check messages, so please leave us a message and we’ll return your call as soon as possible.
NOTE: While we do respond to reports of stray dogs and some cat cases*, we do not handle NON-DOMESTIC animals such as skunks, squirrels, deer, raccoons, etc. Contact your local exterminator for assistance.

* Cats
We respond to reports of injured cats and investigate animal cruelty claims, but unfortunately do not have the facilities to house stray cats. If your cat is missing, please contact the Humane Society of Atchison at 913-367-3647.
